Paver Sealer & Cleaner: How to Seal and Clean Pavers

Pavers cover Australian driveways, courtyards, paths and pool surrounds. They are made from concrete, clay brick or natural stone, laid with open joints, and face sun, rain, foot traffic and cars every day. Most are porous, so oil drips, tyre marks, leaf and tannin stains, rust, mould and efflorescence are common.

Why seal pavers?

Sealing helps reduce staining from oil, grease and organic matter and helps reduce water absorption, so dirt washes off more easily. Depending on the sealer, it can keep the natural look, enrich the colour or add a gloss.

Which paver sealer should I use?

  • Natural look: Aqua-Seal Gold+, a breathable, Professional Grade penetrating sealer. Allow about 110 mL/m² per coat on sand blasted, textured and tumbled pavers, minimum 2 coats.
  • Colour enhanced: Enhance'N'Seal, about 130 mL/m² per coat on paving floors (110 on walls), minimum 2 coats. Brings faded pavers back to life without a shiny film.
  • High gloss: Gloss'N'Seal, about 130 mL/m² per coat, minimum 2 coats. For extra grip on paths and pool surrounds, add Grip-It P Powder to the final coat (anti-slip coat about 80 mL/m²).
  • Soft or dusty pavers: Condense Plus consolidator, 1 coat at about 110 mL/m².
  • New installations: pre-seal with Ultra-Block or Condense Plus (1 coat), or six-sided/dip seal (about 1,000 mL/m²) to help reduce efflorescence and staining from bedding mortar. Adding Eff-Shield+ to the mortar and grout mix also helps reduce efflorescence.
  • Small areas: Spray'N'Seal aerosol.

Coverage is approximate and varies with the paver's density, porosity and texture, the weather and application. Our Product Selector & Calculator will estimate your quantity.

How to clean and seal pavers

  1. Clean: sweep, then deep clean with XtremeClean+ (heavy duty cleaner and degreaser). Use Active Plus for leaf, mould and tannin stains.
  2. Treat stains: Poultice Plus or Poultice Powder for oil. Rust Away for rust and fertiliser marks. On clay and acid-resistant stone pavers only, OxiTreat+ helps remove efflorescence, cement smear and heavy grime. Do not use acid products on concrete pavers or acid-sensitive stone such as travertine, limestone or bluestone.
  3. Dry: allow 24–48 hours of dry weather.
  4. Seal: apply with a Sealer Applicator or low-pressure sprayer, back-roll or brush in, remove puddles, then apply the second coat.
  5. Maintain: wash with EzyClean+ or Boost Plus, which are pH neutral and won't strip the sealer.

Always test a small, inconspicuous area first. See pavers sealers & cleaners or Shop by surface.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best sealer for driveway pavers?

For a natural look with maximum stain resistance against oil, food and grime, use Aqua-Seal Gold+. For a richer colour, use Enhance'N'Seal. Test a small area first.

Will sealing make my pavers slippery?

Penetrating sealers such as Aqua-Seal Gold+ don't form a film and have little effect on texture. Gloss coatings can reduce grip, so add Grip-It P Powder to the final coat of Gloss'N'Seal on walkways and pool areas.

How do I remove oil stains from pavers?

Apply Poultice Plus or Poultice Powder, let it dry and draw the oil out, then remove and repeat if needed. Clean with XtremeClean+ before sealing.

How do I remove white powder (efflorescence) from pavers?

On clay and acid-resistant stone pavers, OxiTreat+ helps remove efflorescence. Avoid acids on concrete or acid-sensitive stone. See our efflorescence remover guide.

How often should pavers be resealed?

Driveways are usually resealed every 2–4 years depending on traffic and weather. When water soaks in rather than beading, it is time.
