Travertine
A calcium-based limestone with natural holes and a warm, earthy look for floors, walls and pools.
Travertine is a form of limestone created by mineral springs, recognised by its natural pores, holes and banding. It is used for floors, bathrooms, feature walls, pool surrounds and paving, in honed, tumbled, filled and unfilled finishes.
Travertine is porous and acid-sensitive, so it can stain from oils and drinks and etch from acidic spills or cleaners. Sealing helps reduce staining and makes cleaning easier, and open holes can trap dirt outdoors. Avoid acidic cleaners, vinegar and pool acid splash; use a pH-neutral stone cleaner and a poultice for deeper stains.

Step 1 What finish is your travertine?

Your finish
Flamed travertine
Flamed travertine is torch-treated to create a rougher, matt surface with better grip underfoot, often used around pools and wet areas. The open, porous texture absorbs spills readily, so sealing with a Colour Enhanced, High Gloss or Natural Look product can help protect it while suiting the chosen style.

Honed travertine
Honed travertine has a smooth, flat matt finish with the shine ground back, giving a soft, even look that feels silky underfoot. It remains fairly porous and can mark easily, so a Colour Enhanced or Natural Look sealer can help guard against stains while keeping the understated finish.

Polished travertine
Polished travertine is ground and buffed to a glossy, reflective surface that shows off the stone's natural veining and colour. Though it looks dense, the surface can still be porous beneath the sheen, so a Colour Enhanced or Natural Look sealer can help reduce staining without dulling the shine.

Sandblasted travertine
Sand blasted travertine has a fine, consistent texture created by blasting the surface with sand, giving a soft matt look with added slip resistance. It tends to be quite porous, so a Natural Look sealer can help reduce staining while leaving the textured appearance unchanged.

Textured travertine
Textured travertine keeps the stone's naturally rugged, uneven surface, giving good grip and a rustic, tactile feel underfoot. This finish is generally quite porous and prone to absorbing spills, so a Natural Look sealer can help reduce staining while preserving the raw, natural texture.

Tumbled travertine
Tumbled travertine is mechanically rounded and roughened to create a soft, aged, rustic look with irregular edges and a pitted texture. The porous, textured surface can trap dirt and moisture, so a Colour Enhanced, High Gloss or Natural Look sealer can help with care depending on the desired finish.
