Concrete
A versatile cement-based surface used for driveways, paths, garage floors and polished or honed interiors.
Concrete is found everywhere from driveways, paths and garage floors to honed and polished interior floors and benchtops. Finishes range from broom-textured and exposed aggregate to smooth, ground and polished surfaces.
Concrete is porous and alkaline, so it readily absorbs oil, grease, food, rust and tyre marks. A suitable sealer helps reduce staining and dusting and makes cleaning easier. Choose a penetrating sealer for a natural look or a coating sealer for a sheen. Clean regularly with a suitable cleaner, and treat efflorescence, mould and oil stains with a dedicated product.

Step 1 What finish is your concrete?

Your finish
Honed concrete
A honed finish is ground back to a smooth, flat surface with a soft matt feel and little to no shine, common on concrete floors and benchtops. This finish tends to be fairly absorbent, so sealing helps reduce staining, with a colour enhanced look to enrich the tone or a natural look that keeps the concrete looking unchanged.

Polished concrete
A polished finish is mechanically ground and buffed to a smooth, reflective surface that shows off the concrete's aggregate and colour. It's generally less porous than honed concrete but can still benefit from sealing, with colour enhanced sealers deepening the look or natural look sealers leaving the surface unchanged.

Sandblasted concrete
A sand blasted finish is created by blasting the concrete surface with abrasive media, leaving a textured, slightly rough and matt appearance. This process opens up the surface, making it more porous and prone to absorbing dirt and spills, so a natural look sealer is suited to help reduce staining without altering its appearance.

Textured concrete
A textured finish refers to concrete with a patterned or roughened surface, often created through stamping, stencilling or other surface treatments for added grip. This finish tends to be more porous and can collect dirt in its grooves, with natural look and colour enhanced sealers helping reduce staining, or a high gloss sealer adding a coated shine, though this may affect slip resistance.
